What density tells you
Density is mass per volume. Water is the anchor: 1 g/cm³ = 1,000 kg/m³ — materials denser than that sink, lighter ones float. Aluminium sits at 2.7 g/cm³, steel near 7.9, gold at 19.3.
The unit landscape
Science uses g/cm³, engineering kg/m³, and US practice pounds per cubic foot (water ≈ 62.4 lb/ft³) or per gallon (≈ 8.34 lb/gal). Since 1 g/cm³, 1 g/mL and 1 kg/L are the same value, the real conversion work is between metric and imperial.
