What torque measures
Torque is rotational force — the twist that tightens a bolt, turns a crankshaft or spins a drill. The SI unit is the newton metre (N·m); US spec sheets use pound-feet (lb-ft), and older Japanese and European manuals often quote kilogram-force metres (kgf·m). The conversions are fixed: 1 lb-ft = 1.355818 N·m and 1 kgf·m = 9.80665 N·m.
Where the conversions matter
Car engines are the most common case — a 400 N·m diesel is a 295 lb-ft engine in US terms. The other everyday case is the torque wrench: US instructions give wheel-lug specs like 80–100 lb-ft, while European wrenches are marked in N·m (108–136 N·m for the same job). Small motors, servos and camera gimbals use the small units instead: kgf·cm and ounce-force inches (ozf·in).
