Sieverts and rems
Equivalent dose measures radiation’s biological effect. The world uses sieverts (usually mSv and µSv); the US nuclear industry still uses rem (100 rem = 1 Sv). Natural background is 2–3 mSv/year (200–300 mrem), a chest X-ray ~0.1 mSv, a chest CT ~7 mSv.
Keeping the scales straight
The µSv–mSv–Sv ladder trips people up in news reports: 1,000 µSv = 1 mSv, 1,000 mSv = 1 Sv. Acute radiation sickness starts around 1 Sv — a million times the daily background dose of roughly 6–8 µSv.
