Newtons, pound-force and kilogram-force
Force is measured in newtons (N) in the SI system: one newton accelerates one kilogram at 1 m/s². US engineering uses pound-force (lbf) — the weight of one pound under standard gravity, exactly 4.4482216 N. The older metric kilogram-force (kgf), still common on scales, gauges and older datasheets, equals 9.80665 N by definition.
Force versus mass
Kilograms and pounds measure mass; newtons, kgf and lbf measure force. The distinction matters as soon as gravity is not the only player — thrust ratings, load cells, cable tension and pressure calculations all mix these units, which is why a 1,000 kgf winch rating and a 9.81 kN one describe the same pull.
