Bits, bytes and the factor of 8
Internet plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbps), but files are measured in bytes — and one byte is 8 bits. That is the whole trick: divide Mbps by 8 to get megabytes per second (MB/s). A 100 Mbps line downloads at 12.5 MB/s; full gigabit means 125 MB/s.
Decimal vs binary rates
Networking uses decimal units (1 Mbps = 1,000,000 bit/s), while many apps report binary MiB/s (1,048,576 bytes per second) — about 4.9% more than a MB/s, which is why Steam can look slower than your speed test. Protocol overhead costs another few percent, so real-world throughput of 94–95% of the advertised rate is normal.
