From m/s² to g-force
Acceleration tells how quickly speed changes. The SI unit is the metre per second squared (m/s²); aviation, motorsport and rollercoasters express the same thing in g — multiples of standard gravity, where 1 g = 9.80665 m/s². US engineering texts use feet per second squared (ft/s²), and seismology uses the Gal (1 cm/s²), named after Galileo.
Everyday reference points
A brisk car does 0–100 km/h in 5 seconds — about 5.6 m/s², or 0.57 g. A Formula 1 car brakes at around 5 g (49 m/s²), a fighter jet turns at up to 9 g, and a dropped smartphone briefly sees well over 100 g on impact. Converting between m/s², g and ft/s² is routine in crash testing, vibration analysis and earthquake engineering.
